Shulin, New Taipei City – Dec.21, 2021 – EVERLIGHT Electronics Co., Ltd., a leading manufacturer in the global LED industry, successfully developed UVC LED that can effectively eradicate SARS-CoV-2 after confirmed by a team led by a researcher, Yi-Ling Lin, in Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Academia Sinica. In specific wavelength of UVC light source, SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) can be effectively reduced to achieve the effect of suppressing the Covid-19 transmission. The Effectiveness of Far-Ultraviolet (UVC) Light Prototype Devices with Different Wavelengths on Disinfecting SARS-CoV-2 in this study has been published at Applied Sciences on November 12, 2021.
Coronavirus in 2019 (COVID-19) led to SARS-CoV-2 has been a severe threat to human health in the world. The most effective way to prevent pandemic is to prevent transmission from interrupting the path for virus spread. UV disinfection is improperly used because the general citizens and some UV disinfection manufacturers are lack of understanding it. In order to break consumer myth, EVERLIGHT worked together with a team led by a researcher, Yi-Ling Lin, in Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Academia Sinica, and published this study at Applied Sciences to understand UVC energy, wavelength and exposure time for reducing SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19). Under the testing conditions of laboratory, based on fixed distance, time and liquid with virus, UVC light prototype devices in 275nm (UVC LED), 254nm (mercury lamp) and 222 nm (excimer lamp) are separately employed to calculate TCID50 and LRV (Log-Reduction Value) as the effectiveness of reducing virus. The results showed that “The ability to reduce virus activity (anti-SARS-CoV-2) in 275 nm was better than those in 222 nm and 254 nm. UVC LED (275nm) using an irradiance of 79.8 μW/cm2 presented the best effect of reducing SARS-CoV-2, where the disinfections can reach 99.99% and 99.9999% after exposed in 5 seconds and 10 seconds, respectively”. EVERLIGHT developed a series of UVC LED (275nm) with this study achievement.
Log-reduction value of UV light devices.
The LRV is a log value with virus reduction. For example: The virus amounts before the exposure of UVC LED and after exposed in 5 seconds are 107 and 102.77, where LRV= Log10107– Log10102.77= 4.23, and the virus reduction ratio is: 1 – 102.77/107= 1 – 10-4.23 = 0.9999=99.99%.
